Please note, this is an AU version of Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho, designed for the rpg [info]xi_rpg which is set in the X-Men universe. This is not a canon interpretation, and his history has been modified extensively.

APPEARANCE Hiei measures in at 5'1". Yes, he is that short. He wears his black hair shaggy, defiantly sticking in any direction but down and hanging in his eyes. His eyes and skin are dark, showing his Japanese heritage. With his wiry frame and short stature, it would be easy to mistake him for someone younger, but his eyes are very old. All three of them.

In the middle of his forehead is a third eye. Unlike the usual two, this one is blue. He usually keeps it covered with a bandanna for two reasons. One, to keep it out of sight, and two, to avoid the headaches he gets from trying to control his power.

Black is the usual color for his attire. He likes comfortable clothes that let him move around freely. Fashion is not something he worries about. At all. Too many years spent worrying about having something to wear at all. There is a tattoo of a black dragon wrapped around his right arm, from his bicep down to his wrist. He tends to wear sleeveless shirts, leaving it on display.
PERSONALITY As with most teenage males, Hiei has a chip on his shoulder. More accurately, he has a boulder. He dislikes most people on sight, and he doesn't need a reason. Abandoned at birth, rejected repeatedly, and spending most of his life socially isolated, he actually has a decent reason for his generally unpleasant attitude. He has no interest in what other people think or say. In his experience, it doesn't matter what he does. He was cursed at birth and abandoned for something he had no control over. Aside from his brief interaction withKurama , he has always been 'the only one'. He has not had any real opportunities to associate with other mutants, or anyone that was mutant friendly.

Most people don't like Hiei. And for good reason. He's rude, defiant, and dislikes authority figures. He has a dark sense of humor and a violent streak. To his mind, the ends always justify the means. It doesn't matter who he has to hurt, so long as he survives. It's kept him alive this long.

Underneath the hostility and violence, Hiei has his personal honor code. If he gives his loyalty, it is absolute. He does not like to harm anyone weaker than himself, and he will hold back if he needs to fight someone that is at a disadvantage. It's all buried underneath his convoluted defense mechanisms, but if someone knows what they're looking for, it's easily spotted. He's never had an opportunity to have a relationship with an individual, either as a friend or anything else, but sometimes, late at night, he wonders what that would be like.
HISTORY Even before he was born, the deck was stacked against Hiei. His mother was part of a powerful, rich family that prided itself on honor and tradition. The extended family lived in a compound where visitors were not welcome. Despite this, she slept with a man while she was still in high school, and became pregnant. Instead of marrying her, he disappeared. Her family was stunned and shamed, tucking her out of sight during her pregnancy. The plan was to pose the offspring as the child of an older sister and preserve the family's honor.

The woman delivered twins. One was a beautiful girl, normal in every way. The other was a boy, and anything but normal. The family's personal physician stared while the newborn cried, all three eyes screwed shut. While the teen mother cried for her baby,Hiei was wrapped in a blanket and taken away. The doctor took him to a hospital, claiming to have found him in a dumpster. With the three eyes watching everyone that looked at him, no one questioned why he was abandoned. The doctor left, and with him went any clue as to whoHiei's family had been.

Hiei was raised as an orphan. As a clear mutant, no family was interested in adopting him. He grew up in an orphanage, avoided by the other children and the caretakers as much as possible. He quickly learned to cover his eye with a white bandanna to avoid being stared at. By the time he was ten, he had become a nightmare to his caretakers and his teachers. He disrupted classes, destroyed property, and stole things. Any child that crossed him was attacked, and despite his small size, he had a habit of winning.

At age fourteen, he ran away from the orphanage, preferring life on the streets. He fell in with a gang. It was the closest he had to a family, and he kept his eye covered. None of them actually knew that he was a mutant. They stole and fought, dodging authorities. He was the youngest member, but he claimed to be older. With his personality and mannerisms, none of them questioned it. He specialized in breaking and entering. With many years of isolation, he had picked up an affinity for hardware. Lock picking, security systems, even toys were modified. When he got older, he picked up some basic hacking abilities.

With puberty came a new situation. Covering the eye became more than just aesthetics after he set a table on fire. The mutant had no idea what to do with this problem, and kept his eye covered as much as possible. However, when a gang fight broke out, his temper got away from him and he burned through the covering. Uncontrolled, he burned everything around him, sending both gangs running from him. The gang wanted nothing to do with him anymore, and set out on his own. He made his way with theft jobs, homeless and making do with whatever he could find. Now that he had no one to hide from, he tried to control his fire starting so he could use it. It was useful as a distraction on his jobs.

At sixteen, he picked up a job to break into an art gallery. He wasn't the only one. There was a second thief involved. Hiei was just a bit too late, and promptly gave chase. The two thieves fought, revealing that they were both mutants. When the authorities arrived, they ended up working together to get away. They parted ways not long afterward, but he has kept in contact with Kurama.

At seventeen, there was an incident. The kind of incident that involves a mutant, police, fire fighters, and news reporters. Hiei was captured, but there was no solid evidence for why he was there. Rather than attempting to send him to jail, an advocate for mutant rights named Professor Xavier spoke up for the rather feral teenager. Better to send him somewhere where they could handle his abilities, rather than having him try to burn a prison down.

A week later, Hiei was landing in America, on his way to the Institute.

POWERS/ABILITIES Hiei's power is fire starting. It's linked to the third eye that he was born with. If he can see something, he can ignite it. Of course it takes more effort to ignite some things, but in his words, everything burns. What he's actually doing is bumping molecules together to create friction and heat, but he doesn't actually understand that right now.

If his eye is closed, his powers are blocked. It is also a line of sight ability. He generally keeps the third eye covered, since that keeps his eye from opening. Controlling his abilities with his eye open is more difficult and it gives him migraines.

Aside from being a mutant, Hiei made his way for years as a thief. His specialty was in bypassing security. He can pick many locks, keeping a lock pick kit in his desk, and is good with security systems. His interests are more hardware than software, but he's a decent hacker on that side. He doesn't know how to steal a password or hack a journal, but he knows some fun ways to hack your equipment and make it act in very interesting ways. If your iPhone is suddenly acting like it's posessed by a demon, look for Hiei. His laptop is a cobbled together mess that he built himself, since he couldn't afford to just buy one. It can keep up with the sleek models, but the catch doesn't close properly and the seams of the case look like they'll go any second now. It's almost impossible to get a laptop case to close again after modifying the insides, but Hiei doesn't care about the appearance. He runs all open source and freeware, so don't ask him any questions about Windows. He'll just stare. He can't afford the software.

Lack of formal education has Hiei behind in most of his classes, particularly writing and literature. He is functionally literate in English, but his reading is slow and he'll make grammatical mistakes when speaking. He's better in his native Japanese, and he takes his notes in class in his native language. Assuming he's ever paying attention.
